Prepare to take a mental bruising as this drama opens with a graphic description of how one man met a miserable, messy end. But this is Ian Rankin's DI Rebus: his cases are to random acts of violence what Morse's were to purposeful intellectual unravelment. It's a superbly challenging plot, involving serial killers, eco-warriors, gangland crime and bent coppers. There's not a single wasted word, with subtle clues hidden everywhere. But you'll have to wait until next week for the thrilling finale, when all the layers of deception come together.
