Description
The sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always(Remastered & Expanded) (2006)
cover pic. "First And Last And Always" remains a landmark in the history of gloomy rock - a near perfect mix of drum machine, rumbling bass, Celtic guitars and baritone vocals. The Sisters live experience was one thing - an amphetamine fuelled cacophony that harked back to their early influences such as the Stooges, Velvet Underground and Rolling Stones - but in the studio, the band were capable of something much more sophisticated. The guitar work, embellished by occassional synth and piano, is actually rather subtle - something the many Sisters clones that followed failed to emulate. The lyrics are undoubtedly heavy handed in places, but reflect the bands aim to be as deliberately pessimistic as possible. Despite this, the words to songs like "Nine While Nine" sound almost poetic! Although the album was first released on CD in 1992, it was a heavily remixed version that satisfied few people apart from Sisters singer Andrew Eldritch. This re-release features the original mixes by Dave Allen, well known for his production work with another seminal 1980's band The Chameleons. The re-release also features the b-sides to both of the singles from the album, all four of which are classic songs in the own right. The CD closes with the full length version of "Train", which had featured in shorter form on the "Body And Soul" EP, and a slightly unnecessary demo of the original albums closing track "Some Kind Of Stranger".
