The Sorcerer's Apprentice



Adapted by Judith French from the 1797 ballad by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, this is the magical story of the apprentice magician left alone in his master's workshop - and the disastrous results which follow.



Judith French's dramatisation re-attaches Goethe's tale to its European roots. The story takes place on Christmas Eve in 16th century Stollenburg. Peter, the Hexenmeister's apprentice, has been left to mind the shop and keep an eye on his master's mischievous daughter and Copernicus, the elderly cat.



Dismayed by missing the festivities, Peter decides to tidy the workshop, go out, and be back in time to pretend he's been there all along. But he fatally reaches for the forbidden book of spells to get everything done. Before long, the shop is under water...
