Jaden wakes up every morning staring at the ceiling of his dormitory room livid at Death wondering just why the hell he wasn’t dead yet. Reluctantly seeking penance by means of community service for an ill-conceived and wicked prank gone horribly awry, Jaden’s dismal attitude begins to change when he meets a college mate, Melanie; a variation of a gun placed against his head, and though a less violent depiction of an instrument of change she is unimaginably more powerful. Unbeknownst to him, Melanie is very far from the average girl--- actually, very, very far from human at all (or any manner humanoid being, period), though she wears the guise when it’s convenient. Despite Jaden’s immediate and earnest efforts to distance himself from her he finds himself failing and cannot fathom why; as cold as his heart is it should be a near effortless task, he thought. And it certainly would have been had Melanie not been far more than she appeared to be. Jaden’s affinity for her grows enkindling the dying sparks that had almost seen their last glint fade among the dying embers that had lain within his cold and unfeeling heart. Over the passage of time and wholly unaware to Jaden he finds that he has fallen in love with her. But alas, Jaden’s love is unrequited. And whereas Jaden’s heart was being wrenched, Melanie’s work had only just begun. Never could Jaden have imagined that Melanie was but a part of a far greater agenda.
