THE SURRENDERED (pub 2010) by Chang-rae Lee mobi format
REVIEW EXCERPT FROM The Telegraph:
Chang-rae Lee likes to start his novels at the moment when his characters feel they have reached their destination. Aloft (2004) opened with Jerry Battle surveying Long Island from an aeroplane and thinking, “Everything looks perfect”. Franklin Hata introduced A Gesture Life (1999) by declaring that “everyone knows me here”. In both novels, the narrators were quickly disabused of such solid self-reassurance. Back on the ground, Battle’s life was far from perfect, while Hata strove to prevent anyone from finding out anything about himself.

The Surrendered by Chang-rae Lee

“The journey was nearly over,” begins The Surrendered, inviting scepticism, not least because there are nearly 470 pages to go.

The journey that ends as the novel begins is that of June, an 11-year-old fleeing the Korean War in 1950. She is sheltering in a farmhouse when a quarrel breaks out among the other refugees. A blind man berates them for their indifference to the plight of a woman who died “alone and afraid and in misery” and urges them to hang on to “something as basic” as their “decency”. That challenge lies at the heart of The Surrendered. The story of how to deal with the dying is never “nearly over”.

Lee’s novel manages to be both an ossuary, with bones piled up in commemoration and warning, and a gripping page-turner. At the same time, The Surrendered sees itself as a blockbuster in The English Patient tradition, interweaving set pieces of violence and scenes of redemptive sex between attractive protagonists.

And yet within The Surrendered lies a third novel, one less concerned with staging the traumatic injuries of “tumultuous world history” than with detailing the excruciatingly banal surrenders and palliatives of a cancer death. There is no room for melodrama in the story of June’s “ever-slackening” body, and that’s perhaps why it’s this familiar personal story that most convinces.
