Herbert George Wells was a 19th-century English author who invented many of the tropes of science fiction, including interplanetary war (The War of the Worlds), invisibility (and by extensions, other super-powers) through science (The Invisible Man), deliberate elevation of animals to sentience (The Island of Dr. Moreau), suspended animation (The Sleeper Awakes), travel to the moon (The First Men on the Moon), and others. Of all his books, the most original is probably The Time Machine, in which he invented the idea of traveling through time. Published in 1895, it's the seed of all time-travel stories, books, movies, and TV shows. Sharing Widget |
