The problem with so much of the history of WWII on the Eastern Front is that for decades, little was known from the Russian side because of strict Soviet censorship and historical archives being closed to foreigners (and even to most Russians.) Moreover, many German archival documents and films were captured by the Soviets, so even more info was withheld from public view. Worse, the memoirs of skilled Soviet leaders like Zhukov, Chuikov and Vassilevsky were littered with the obligatory Red propaganda which was a requirement for being published at all.
