The horrific stories of the concentration camps in war time Germany have been well documented, but many may not be aware that the persecution of the Jews began much earlier.

In a brand new two hour documentary special, H2 examines evidence uncovered in the Russian State Film Archive by film historian Dr Jeremy Hicks that reveals the true extent of the atrocities carried out against the Jewish community. "It shows that the Holocaust wasn’t just about industrialised killing," says Hicks. "This footage opens a new chapter, and it is truly shocking, so it was not an easy decision to show it — you will be shocked when you watch it, but it is important that you do. “It took me a week to get through a film of an hour and a half. It really shocked me. These are the earliest films of the Holocaust, the initial stage, the mass killing by bullets. This preceded the construction of the camps, the gas chambers and crematoria.”

The programme contains previously unseen footage of the horrific 1941 massacre at Babi Yar, Kiev. Where some 33,000 Jewish people were shot and killed by the Nazis in the space of just two days. This, alongside newly-discovered documents and films of the Nazi genocide at Kerch, leads historians to wonder whether the East was effectively used as a testing ground for the industrial scale killing which later took place in Auschwitz and other concentration camps in Europe.

Inevitably it makes for harrowing but essential viewing as Hicks seeks to uncover the true extent of The Unseen Holocaust.
