The Poor Stranger [4:05] 11 Waiting [3:00] A series of projects released as the Diversions series has ensured The Unthanks have remained a near-constant presence in the minds of their many admirers, despite not having released an album proper since 2011’s Last. The impression here is that, despite the modest banner, those diversions may have been instrumental in The Unthanks’ development. The magical opening title track suggests that their extra-curricular embrace of Robert Wyatt’s songs encouraged the group to let their jazzier impulses run their course; the key is that it feels like a natural development. Over the course of 10 minutes, the Unthank sisters’ chant-like vocals wrap around serpentine trumpet as the song builds to a stirring climax. On Last Lullaby the band’s experience working with Brighouse And Rastrick Brass Band are brought to the fore – as is their knack of reinventing a standard as they paraphrase The Beatles’ Golden Slumbers, making something entirely new and special of it. The last Diversions release, Songs From The Shipyards, soundtracked a documentary of shipbuilding in the north east. It was a spare, affecting collection of mostly traditional songs, and acts as a prelude to this collection. Themes hinted at on that release are further explored here, most notably on highlights Madam and Foundling. It’s not all looking back, though. The jazz-flecked Flutter sees the band at their most modern-sounding, and it all adds up to reaffirm that The Unthanks are among the most quietly accomplished groups around.
