It's no surprise to discover at the end of this first episode of a series about the world wide web that it's an Open University programme. It's a well turned, thoughtful survey of how interactivity is changing the world - but boy does it feel worthy. Presenter Dr Aleks Krotoski knows her subject back to front, but you get the feeling she's straining for an air of authority. As a result she ends up overloading her script: a typical piece to camera about the web includes the line "Its potential and our potential would pose a particular challenge to traditional notions of ownership, creativity and power". It looks OK on the page, but try saying it. It's a mouthful, and listening to lots of lines like that makes you feel like you're in a seminar or a lecture room, receiving pronouncements from on high. Get over that awkwardness, though, and the programme is full of riches. The contributors are top-drawer (Bill Gates, Tim Berners-Lee, Stephen Fry etc), the story is exciting and the tech stuff is explained in ways any fool can understand. With a bit more lightness of touch, this would be a triumph.
