Artist: The Who Title: Quadrophenia Genre: Rock, hard rock, progressive rock Label: © Geffen Records Release Date: 1973/2014 Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit Source: hdtracks Duration: 3:06:38 Recorded: May 1972 and June–August 1973, Olympic Studios, London, Ramport Studios in Battersea, London with Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio Pete Townshend revisited the rock opera concept with another double-album opus, this time built around the story of a young mod's struggle to come of age in the mid-'60s. If anything, this was a more ambitious project than Tommy, given added weight by the fact that the Who weren't devising some fantasy but were re-examining the roots of their own birth in mod culture. In the end, there may have been too much weight, as Townshend tried to combine the story of a mixed-up mod named Jimmy with the examination of a four-way split personality (hence the title Quadrophenia), in turn meant to reflect the four conflicting personas at work within the Who itself. The concept might have ultimately been too obscure and confusing for a mass audience. But there's plenty of great music anyway, especially on "The Real Me," "The Punk Meets the Godfather," "I'm One," "Bell Boy," and "Love, Reign o'er Me." Some of Townshend's most direct, heartfelt writing is contained here, and production-wise it's a tour de force, with some of the most imaginative use of synthesizers on a rock record. Various members of the band griped endlessly about flaws in the mix, but really these will bug very few listeners, who in general will find this to be one of the Who's most powerful statements. --Richie Unterberger Tracklist: 1 I Am The Sea 02:09 2 The Real Me 03:20 3 Quadrophenia 06:17 4 Cut My Hair 03:46 5 The Punk And The Godfather 05:18 6 I'm One 02:39 7 The Dirty Jobs 04:30 8 Helpless Dancer 02:36 9 Is It In My Head? 03:46 10 I've Had Enough 06:18 11 5:15 05:03 12 Sea And Sand 05:06 13 Drowned 05:28 14 Bell Boy 05:00 15 Doctor Jimmy 08:39 16 The Rock 06:40 17 Love Reign O'er Me 05:55 18 The Real Me (Demo) 04:27 19 Quadrophenia - 4 Overtures (Demo) 06:21 20 Cut My Hair (Demo) 03:30 21 Fill No' 1 - Get Out And Stay Out (Demo) 01:24 22 Quadrophenic Four Faces (Demo) 04:04 23 We Close Tonight (Demo) 02:44 24 You Came Back (Demo) 03:19 25 Get Inside (Demo) 03:11 26 Joker James (Demo) 03:42 27 Punk (Demo) 04:56 28 I'm One (Demo) 02:37 29 Dirty Jobs (Demo) 03:48 30 Helpless Dancer (Demo) 02:16 31 Is It In My Head?
