The Yellow Kid was the first comic strip character to achieve a popularity so great that he increased the sales of newspapers carrying him, and was also the first to be merchandised profitably. The Kid and his creator, Richard Outcault, are generally credited with permanently establishing the comic strip and with making it a part of American society, despite the fact that the Kid's entire run in the comics pages lasted only three years.
