He now follows this with The Yellow Sea, an epic masterpiece that breathes new life into the action genre. What follows is a chaotic joyride of violence, double-crosses and some of the most intense hand-to-hatchet action you are ever likely to see! The Yellow Sea has been voted ‘BEST NEW CRIME DRAMA’ and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It blends multiple genres with ease offering not only a magnificently exciting series of escalating action sequences but also one of the most compelling character dramas in recent history. The Yellow Sea is the first Korean film to ever receive investment from a major Hollywood studio (Fox International Productions). Yanji city, Yanbian Korean autonomous prefecture, Jilin province, northeast China, near the North Korean border, the present day. 1. The Taxi Driver. Cabbie Kim Gu-nam (Ha Jeong-woo), an ethnic Korean in China (aka joseonjok) who lives with his mother (Seong Byeong-suk) and young daughter, has mahjong debts of RMB60,000 (US$9,200) and is under pressure from his creditors. He's approached by gangster Myeon Jeong-hak (Kim Yun-seok), a fellow Korean, with the offer of ₩500,000 (US$450) in cash and a further RMB57,000 (US$8,800) on completion of a job, to kill onetime judo champion Professor Kim Seung-hyeon (Gwak Byeong-gyu) in South Korea. While there, Gu-nam can also try to find his wife Lee Hwa-ja (Tak Seong-eun), who went to South Korea six months ago to earn some money but has not been in contact since. Gu-nam travels from Yanji to Dalian port, and then across the Yellow Sea to South Korea, in a boatload of illegals. 2. The Killer. Gu-nam is told that the boat back to China will leave Incheon port in 10 days time, on 16 Jan, and will not wait. Staking out the professor's address, a heavily protected sixth-floor flat, Gu-nam finds he always comes back late at night with his driver/bodyguard (Kim Gi-hwan). But Gu-nam also wastes valuable time trying to find his wife. Shortly before the boat is to leave, he makes his move, but the professor is killed by two men just before Gu-nam enters the building. In the chaos he just manages to escape the police. 3. Joseonjok. Finding the boat address in Incheon is fictional, Gu-nam heads south towards Busan port and is almost arrested by police on a coach near Hwaseong. Gangster Kim Tae-won (Jo Seong-ha), a onetime friend of the professor, puts out a contract on Gu-nam and orders his deputy Choi Seong-nam (Lee Cheol-min) to bring Myeon to South Korea. Gu-nam tracks down one of the professor's killers in Busan. Meanwhile, Myeon, who's arrived in the country, immediately starts causing major trouble for Kim Tae-won. 4. The Yellow Sea. Kim Tae-won's men attack Myeon and his gang one night and Myeon just manages to escape alive. Gu-nam meets the professor's wife (Im Ye-won), tells her who hired the two killers of her husband, and offers to kill those who started the whole chain of death. Myeon hunts down Kim Tae-won. And Gu-nam, after learning the whole truth about the professor's death, hijacks a boat across the Yellow Sea back to China.
