Description
The Prisoner: The 1967 cult-classic conceived and produced by Patrick McGoohan
The Prisoner is a 17-episode British television series first broadcast in the UK from 29 September 1967 to 1 February 1968. Starring and co-created by Patrick McGoohan, it combined spy fiction with elements of science fiction, allegory and psychological drama. The series follows a British former secret agent who is held prisoner in a mysterious seaside village where his captors try to find out why he abruptly resigned from his job. Although sold as a thriller in the mould of McGoohan's previous series, Danger Man (called Secret Agent in its U.S. release), the show's combination of 1960s countercultural themes and surreal setting had a far-reaching effect on science fiction/fantasy programming, and on popular culture in general. There is much dispute among "Danger Man" and "The Prisoner" fans whether John Drake, the main character in "Danger Man" is Number 6. Given the cancellation of "Danger Man" (McGoohan resigned to work on "The Prisoner"), and then the appearance of Number 6 in "The Prisoner" about 6 months later in 1967, the time lines agree with the "disapparance" of Drake then appearance of Number 6 in "The Village". The first episode of "The Prisoner" aired September 29, 1967. There are many similarities between DM and TP. There are many DM sets that are similar or identical to what appears in TP. Camera angles, cast members, and locations in and around London are similar between both series. Watch both series, and form your own opinion whether John Drake is Number 6. Patrick Mcgoohan denies this is true. This may be becuase of who owned the rights to the John Drake character. Even more interesting, the DM episode "Colony Three" is essentially a story board for "The Prisoner". This topic is discussed in more detail in "The Prisoner Companion" bonus feature. Sharing Widget |
