Description

Dedication: This release is a (somewhat belated) welcome-back present for VikTSlick49457 !

The Adventures of Tintin: Tintin in the Congo @ Wikipedia

Story notes: Tintin and Snowy go adventuring in the Congo, leaving no "White Man's (or Dog's) Burden" cliche unexpressed and no species unendangered! Otherwise, this volume is just as charming and gorgeous as all the other, less controversial, ones, though.

Scanscription notes: The timeline of this release meanders thusly...
image1930-31:imageOriginal serialized publication
image1931:imageOriginal single-volume edition
image1946:imageOriginal colour edition
image1975:imageRevised colour edition
image1991:imageEnglish translation of the 1931 edition
image1997:imageGerman translation of the 1975 edition
image2008:imageGerman translation of the 1946 edition
image( 2014:imagegesserit combines scans of the 1991 and 2008 editions into this! )

The differences between the 1946 and 1975 editions are confined to a single page (cf the first paragraph of the "later alterations and releases" section in the 'pedia article), both versions of which are included here. About 2% of the text is original re-translation, as there was no direct correspondence between the to-be-filled speech bubble and any of the ones in the English scan. About 10% is slightly edited, as one to-be-filled bubble corresponded to several in the English scan, or vice versa. The remainder could be directly transferred, subject to the occasional need to redo the word wrapping because of changes in bubble shape.

Well, it is unarguably "racist" in the sense that it chronicles racist stereotypes and undercurrents - like pretty much every other work created from the Middle Ages thru the end of Colonialism in which a white protagonist encounters non-white characters. What's laughable (at best) is this blinkered view many modern readers seem to have that anything written in the past that doesn't accord with modern politically-correct sensibilities should be avoided - instead of simply enjoyed for what it is, once one has mentally accounted for and adjusted to the historical context. Sigh. :)
thnx
Fantastic work, my friend. Your effort is much appreciated here. :-)
