Imagine if you will a Super Bowl halftime performance without wardrobe malfunctions, awkward rock/pop collaborations, cheesy skits or explosions. Hard, isn't it? But 2008's four-song set by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was a restrained and, dare we say it, classy exercise in musicianship and populist appeal, with Petty playing radio staples "American Girl," "I Won't Back Down," "Free Fallin'" and "Runnin' Down a Dream" on a heart-shaped stage bisected by a guitar. Petty was obviously appreciative of the intense crowd reaction and it felt like a real concert. Gratefully the producers kept logos and crass commercialization to a minimum for once.
