Torchwood: Children of Earth - Day One



Scotland in 1965: kids in duffel coats and bobble hats climb off a bus, walk towards a bright light and vanish; Cardiff in 2009: children across the city stop in their tracks and stare blankly ahead. And it's not because they've spent too long on their Wiis or prepping for Sats. There's a mystery to solve as the Torchwood team of Wales-based alien hunters transfers from BBC2 to 1 for the week, and the prospect of five consecutive nights of primetime sci-fi might be off-putting for many. But there's plenty of pounding, Spooks-style action between all the alien jargon, though all the best scenes in the opening episode are rooted in the domestic, as show creator Russell T Davies updates us on the lead characters' relationships. Gwen and her husband Rhys are looking for a new home, Ianto and the indestructible Captain Jack are getting used to being a couple and, best of all, Jack pays his daughter Alice (Lucy Cohu) a surprise visit. It's a low-key but poignant moment, and the kind of thing Davies crafts beautifully.
