The SRT file is just a bog standard ASCII text file. Just rename it to the same name as your AVI file.

For example if your AVI file is "Travels with Vasari Part1.avi" then rename the SRT file to "Travels with Vasari Part1.srt" and play the AVI file with VLC or MPC - the subtitles will then appear.
