Treasure Island (1999)



This is a loose adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson`s

classic adventure yarn starring Jack Palance as Long

John Silver

Outline of story-----------Jim Hawkins comes into possession

of a map of Capt Flint`s buried treasure and together with

Squire Trelawney(+servants)and Dr Livesey whom he confides

in,they set sail to find it having hired the services of Capt Smollett

with a crew mostly made up of pirates led by Long John Silver who

are also after the treasure



This version has been criticised for not being true to the original plot

but it was never intended to be a definitive version.There have been

so many versions that have attempted to remain true to the book,this

version put a different spin on it.IMHO it is more realistic in depicting

the true nature of past & present human society i.e the high & mighty

are just as capable of being as dishonest and dishonourable as the

lowliest criminal elements

What I like about this version is that it has the balls

to change the tired old plot to bring a good yarn into the real world

and out of the black and white ,adolescent fantasy world of "good &

evil"

Anyway if your a purist you`ll hate this film but if your open-minded

and want to see a classic yarn with a different slant on it then you may

enjoy this
