Description

37 miles in 17 minutes. For 7 laps. On a motorbike. On public roads.

Using the historic 2010 TT meeting as a vehicle to document the story of the Isle of Man TT races, this film illustrates wholly just why this controversial event retains an immense popularity, and why the ethical questions of motorsport become irrelevant - these men and women just love doing this.

The film covers the story of the telegenic Wolverine-lookalike Guy Martin's experience of the 2010 meet, and interweaves that of the other competitors, legends of road-racing including John McGuinness, the Dunlop family, Bruce Anstey and Ian Hutchinson. There are extensive interviews with the racers, the organisers, the survivors (Milky Quayle and Nick Crowe), fans, the widowed, relatives, organisers, teams, commentators (Steve Parish and Phil McCallen, both of whom raced the TT, the latter with great success) and onlookers (Loris Capirossi makes clear the esteem in which these racers are held by their peers in other disciplines). A complete perspective as to why this event really is so special, and despite its obvious dangers, so optimistic and encouraging in its view of human nature.

The photography is excellent - from the intimacy of the garages to the slo-mos, and the contrast between narrow roads and the openness of the mountain itself. There is also extensive use made of the archives, illustrating the long history of the race - it is one of the oldest motorsport events still competed. It is also candid - the use of modern cameras has meant that there is no disguising the speed and sudden disaster of a crash at 160mph.

Yes, you get those two cliches Triumph and Tragedy, but you get a lot more - an understanding of a unique event that draws competitors and fans from around the world, to challenge and admire, to test skill, nerve, audacity and technology. And this makes it a human, personal experience.
