Description
Under Milk Wood
A play for voices (book)
Under Milk Wood is a major work. This fairy-tale village of Llaregyb, with its population of gnomes, is Thomas’s most popular creation. It almost creates the very colours, the smells, the caresses of the air passing over the town under the invisible propulsion of the hours. This is quite magical, and will surely establish it as a masterpiece in its own kind. Humour seeps through the images, earthy and ripe, as primitive as that in the medieval secular plays, as roseate as that in Chaucer’s verse. The most enchanting and original work for broadcasting ever written. The images as they flash past us are always attractive and stimulating, no longer puzzling. Pathos, ribald fun, lyric beauty and homeliness mixed with an exuberance of language. In its proudly irresponsible gaiety, its knowingness and tenderness and rich rhetoric, this play for voices is a fitting epitaph for a man who played in such a masterly way with words. Alive and irresistibly gay. The humour earthy and rich. About the file As usual for me, this is a scan, turned into a djvu with extra OCRed hidden text. That text has not been proofread at all. Also, it contains ligatures. Search for, e.g., “finger” with fi as one character. The file also contains bookmarks to jump to the different chapters. The cover is looking quite used, (well, it is), but the scans of the main part look better. There may be an a black grain here or there. Take it or leave it. djvu To view djvu files, use a viewer listed at DjVu.org.
