Album Review - Geekus Eclectica
As great as this disc was to begin with, I've only found myself appreciating it more over time; which you certainly can't say with a lot of acts. One thing that has continued to make this album, and UBO itself, stand out for me is that I listen to a LOT of acid jazz/downtempo/e-lounge/etc. and eventually much of it becomes mush that all sounds the same.
Never so for UBO. Their sound is unique to them, and it isn't afraid to happily stray off into all kinds of odd and unexpected places. These guys aren't afraid to cross boundaries, and perhaps even make a point of it - it's always a musical adventure for these people. Furthermore, speaking of boundaries I guess, their sound actually comes off as more "worldly" - as in, their musical perspective is hardly enveloped in the tiny subset of electronic:acid jazz:downtempo. There are many Latin influences, social/political interests and lyrics, and a real variety of moods and emotions.
When an act stands out for me this long, and only grows on me, well, it's a keeper.
