This four-disc set (four CDs of music, the original 100 Hits:Halloween set's 20 track karaoke DVD not included) has many of the songs one expects to find on a Halloween-themed collection, songs like Bobby “Boris” Pickett's “Monster Mash,” which seems to be on every such compilation, or Screamin’ Jay Hawkins' “I Put a Spell on You,” which gets around pretty well, too, but this set goes deeper than the obvious and pulls out dozens of other appropriately themed tracks from an amazingly diverse roster of artists that includes Robert Johnson, Frank Sinatra, Thelonious Monk, Otis Spann, Glenn Miller, Steve Miller, Johnny Cash, and many others. It ends up being a fascinating musical survey of the way we’ve sung, shouted and crooned about the devil, darkness, witches, ghosts, demons, monsters and, of course, love. This is not only the perfect set to play on Halloween night, it makes for a pretty fascinating discussion of what cajoles, entices, haunts, and frightens us in this world. And you can dance to it.
