Vampire Hunter D (バンパイアハンターD) è un manga adattato dall'omonima serie di romanzi iniziata nel 1983 dello scrittore giapponese Hideyuki Kikuchi.
Il manga ruota attorno alla figura di D, un dampiro (essere nato dall'unione di un vampiro e di una donna umana)
che caccia i vampiri sfruttando la capacità del suo sangue di uccidere questi esseri.
In Italia il manga è stato rilasciato dalla Jpop.
"D" è un cacciatore di vampiri come pochi o nessuno è mai vissuto sulla terra.
Siamo nel 12090, un futuro molto lontano da ogni percezione, e sul nostro pianeta la razza dei vampiri è finalmente venuta allo scoperto.
Nuovi mutanti e specie abitano il nostro mondo e gli umani sanno tenersi bene alla larga dai luoghi infestati.
Ma i vampiri, esseri millenari, entrano nella vita dei poveri mortali di tanto in tanto e i motivi non sono mai buoni.
La storia inizia con la vicenda del Conte Magnus Lee e della sua voglia di avere vicino, come moglie, una tra le più belle ragazze della cittadina: Doris.
In suo soccorso arriva il cacciatore di vampiri D,
tenebroso e misterioso uomo a cavallo con addosso i poteri necessari per contrastare la razza dei vampiri in quanto Dhampir,
ovvero essere partorito da padre vampiro e madre umana.
Azione e avventura intrisi in atmosfere dark porteranno D, Doris e il Conte ad una serie di inevitabili scontri.
Il bene nato dal male contro il male.
Nel 1985 venne realizzato un OAV di 80 minuti ispirato alla serie di romanzi.
La storia è ambientata in un distante futuro, nel 12.090 d.C.
In quest'epoca i Nobili (ovvero i Vampiri) hanno preso il totale controllo sull'umanità e ben pochi sono coloro che osano opporsi al loro regno del terrore.
Una ragazza di nome Doris viene morsa dal sinistro Conte, un Nobile antichissimo e potentissimo, che ha deciso di fare di lei la sua sposa.
La ragazza assume così un cacciatore di vampiri, D.
In Italia esistono due versioni, una censurata e un'altra integrale, quest'ultima distribuita da Yamato Video.
