Collects the complete Archie Goowin run of VAMPIRELLA. After 7 issues (and about 3 appearances), Goodwin, without contradicting anything that came before, completely changed the tone of the series from light-hearted sci-fi-horror romp, to dark, brooding, supernatural horror-romance. Think "DARK SHADOWS" with an alien girl from space thrown in. He also tossed in a good helping of H.P. Lovecraft's "C'thulu" mythos while he was at it, in the form of "The Cult Of Chaos" and their own version of the "Necronomicon", "The Crimson Chronicles". In doing so, he turned Vampi from a free-wheeling engine of sexy destruction to a haunted, sympathetic heroine.

That wasn't all-- he also introduced a supporting cast in that of the blind psychic vampire hunter, Conrad Van Helsing (who always reminds me of Michael Gough) and his son Adam (who reminds me of Ian Ogilvy). Conrad believes Vampi killed his brother, and wants her destroyed; Adam can't believe it, especially when he falls in love with her (who wouldn't?). There's also the stage magician Pendragon (who reminds me of an aging Peter Cushing) who befriends her, knows her secret, but passes her off as his assistant to audiences who don't know her changing into a bat routine is NOT an illusion!

If any of this sounds familiar-- particularly the "evil cult", and the "blood substitute serum" one of their number helped develop for her to keep her from unwantingly killing any more innocent people-- it's because the 1st "BLADE" movie ripped it off shamelessly and uncredited.

The art is by the quirky Tom Sutton (one of the few artists who helped Warren get thru its period of financial difficulties in the late 60s), who was Vampi's original artist from the beginning, and then Jose Gonzalez, who really made the series his own with his lavish, moody Spanish stylings.

VAMPIRELLA's series had a lot of ups and downs over its 112-issue run, both in story and art quality. There are some magnificent entries later on... but the 8+ episodes here are the only REALLY essential ones you'd ever need. All the same, if you can possibly track down the original magazines, (like I once did!), do so. You won't regret it.
