Various Artists Be Bop in Britain - Vol 1 and 2
Bop-In' Britain The Learning Curve Volume 1 Label : Jasmine Release Date: 1 June 2003 Format : Mp3@320 The new changes in jazz improvisation in America, coming under the somewhat unedifying nomenclature of bebop, permeated rather slowly into the British jazz scene during the mid 1940s, partly because most of the more jazz-influenced big bands of the time were wary of its potential and longevity. Equally though was the telling fact that in those days what we now take for granted of American jazz groups working in Britain, and vice-versa, was unheard of, due to the counter-productive blockage on the exchange of British and American musicians by their respective Unions. A compilation of very early British Modern Jazz from some very obscure labels such as Bosworth and Paxton with other tracks coming from Decca and Melodisc. All were originally on 78 rpm discs recorded between 1949 and 1951 and were transferred to CD for re-issue. This album, in continuing the story, shows that by the early 1950s, in spite of what was now little more than passive resistance from the earlier musical generation and, of course, the very vocal but ridiculous Trad-v-Modern lobby of those days, a growing number of working and highly articulate young musicians were showing that bebop had become their natural mode of jazz expression.
