Description Vernon Duke--or Vladimir Dukelsky, as he was known before emigrating from the Soviet--worked in two worlds: as an accomplished classical composer, and as a popular songwriter. He was successful at both, though those he worked with in either field tended, like his friend Prokofiev, to look down on the other. His early work on this disc is a French, Neo-Classical ballet written to a scenario that's deliberately 18th century in its stylization: two wind gods vie for the love of Spring. With sets by Braque, costumes by Coco Chanel, and choreography by Massine, it was a great success, and would have probably led to many others along similar lines if the coming war hadn't driven Duke out of Europe. Though Stravinsky is clearly invoked, the work has a color and personality all its own. Transfers are made at 768 kBits/s, directly from the disc. Bio enclosed.
