Curse of the Crimson Altar is a 1968 British
horror film directed by Vernon Sewell.
The film was produced by Louis M. Heyward for
Tigon British Film Productions. The film was cut
and released as The Crimson Cult in the United
States. It is based (uncredited) on the short
story "The Dreams in the Witch House" by H. P.
Lovecraft. This film also featured one of the
final appearances of horror heavyweight Karloff.

Although the titlescreen for this film proclaims
"Curse of the Crimson Altar" - this is "The Crimson
Cult" U.S. version. You can tell from the beginning
by the synth music that replaced the original
soundtrack. It was not allowed on the US release
due to copyright problems and that is the only
difference between the two.

STORY:

When his brother disappears, Robert Manning
pays a visit to the remote country house he
was last heard from. While his host is
outwardly welcoming - and his niece more
demonstrably so - Manning detects a feeling
of menace in the air with the legend of
Lavinia Morley, Black Witch of Greymarsh,
hanging over everything.
