Description
Vilkachi, a group that performs folk music and re-enacts ancient fighting techniques [...]. Led by Dāvis Stalts, the Rīga-based Vilkači was founded in 2000. Vilkači (Werewolves) should not be confused with another group, Vilki (Wolves), which also performs ancient war songs and recreates ancient lifestyles. However, as Stalts admits on his blog, the all-male Vilki served as inspiration for Vilkachi. The group started with six, but now has about 20 participants.
Vilkachi focuses on the 10th through 13th centuries and seeks to study and recreate how the ancient peoples of Latvia lived. Stalts describes Vilkachi as a club divided along three interests: crafts, music and re-enactment of ancient fighting. Andris Straumanis editor of Latvians Online.
