L'intera storia è raccontata dal punto di vista di Pi da grande, il quale parla rivolto a uno scrittore interessato a trarre dalla sua vicenda un libro; inizia così il lungo flashback che

dura quasi tutto il film.

Piscine Molitor Patel (tale è il vero nome di Pi) è un ragazzo indiano che vive nella parte francese dell'India, Pondicherry, con il padre, la madre e il fratello maggiore Ravi. Egli è nato

all'interno di uno zoo - creato all'interno di un vecchio giardino botanico - di proprietà di suo padre (che vi incontrò la futura madre di Pi), che ospita numerosi animali, tra i quali il

"pezzo forte" è una tigre del Bengala di nome Richard Parker. In realtà la tigre si sarebbe dovuta chiamare "thirsty" (assetata), ma per un errore di trascrizione le venne assegnato il nome

del cacciatore che l'aveva catturata..............



In Canada, a writer visits the Indian storyteller Pi Patel and asks him to tell his life story. Pi tells the story of his childhood in Pondicherry, India, and the origin of his nickname.

One day, his father, a zoo owner, explains that the municipality is no longer supporting the zoo and he has hence decided to move to Canada, where the animals the family owns would also be

sold. They board on a Japanese cargo ship with the animals and out of the blue, there is a storm, followed by a shipwrecking. Pi survives in a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena

and a male Bengal tiger nicknamed Richard Parker...............
