In his musical encyclopedia, French musicologist François-Joseph Fétis wrote, "The music of Wranitzky [German spelling; Vranicky was the Bohemian original] was in fashion when it was new, because of his natural melodies and brilliant style. He treats the orchestra well, especially in symphonies. I recall that, in my youth, his works held up very well in comparison with those of Haydn. Their premature abandonment of today has been for me a source of astonishment."

It shouldn't have been. Musical styles change. Those who manage for whatever reason to gain the most attention often survive, while others vanish. Vranicky was not just highly regarded in his own time as a composer, but as a conductor: both Haydn and Beethoven entrusted some of their most complex scores to his baton. But when Romanticism came in, his reputation took a a dive. These days he's being championed by many conductors, and recordings of his music are steadily increasing. This symphony dates from around 1790.
