A few years ago, I discovered Polish clarinetist Waclaw Zimpel, has worked with Ken Vandermark, Olie Brice & Perry Robinson. Mr. Zimpel has a handful of discs out as a leader. The To Tu Orchestra is a nine-piece ensemble with unique instrumentation: two reeds, recorder, hurdy-gurdy, piano, tow basses and two drummers. I can't recall anyone using the hurdy-gurdy or recorders in the improv setting in a long while. This disc opens with a piece called "Cycles" which is dedicated to Terry Riley. It is actually a somber, Rileyesque (repeating phrases), hypnotic piece. Quite lovely and featuring quiet bowed bass which sounds more like a cello with quaint clarinets underneath. this piece is nearly a half-hour long and thoroughly enchanting. It reminds me of something that Eyvind Kang might compose. The title piece, "Nature Moves" is in three parts and is again endearing: orchestral, folky, organic sounding, fairy-tale like. The piece slowly builds into some strong crescendos, yet remains dream-like through much of its long, sailing wave-like length. This disc is one of the most delightful discs I've heard in a long while. Unlike anything else on the ForTune label or almost anything else we've listed in a recent times. -- By Dan Sorrells http://www.freejazzblog.org/...-to-tu-orchestra-nature.html By Dirk Blasejezak http://www.polish-jazz.blogs...-tu-orchestra-nature_20.html By Adam Baruch http://www.adambaruch.com/reviews_item.asp?item=104622 By Krzysztof Wójcik (pl) http://www.popupmusic.pl/no/...to-tu-orchestra-nature-moves Sharing Widget |
