The To Tu Orchestra features Waclaw Zimpel in clarinets, Pawel Postaremczak
on tenor & soprano saxes, Dominik Strycharski on recorders, Maciej Cierlinski
on hurdy-gurdy, Jacek Kita on piano, Wojkowski & Mike Majkowski on double
basses and Pawel Szura & Hubert Zemler on drums.

A few years ago, I discovered Polish clarinetist Waclaw Zimpel, has worked
with Ken Vandermark, Olie Brice & Perry Robinson. Mr. Zimpel has a handful
of discs out as a leader. The To Tu Orchestra is a nine-piece ensemble with
unique instrumentation: two reeds, recorder, hurdy-gurdy, piano, tow basses
and two drummers. I can't recall anyone using the hurdy-gurdy or recorders
in the improv setting in a long while. This disc opens with a piece called
"Cycles" which is dedicated to Terry Riley. It is actually a somber,
Rileyesque (repeating phrases), hypnotic piece. Quite lovely and featuring
quiet bowed bass which sounds more like a cello with quaint clarinets
underneath. this piece is nearly a half-hour long and thoroughly enchanting.
It reminds me of something that Eyvind Kang might compose. The title piece,
"Nature Moves" is in three parts and is again endearing: orchestral, folky,
organic sounding, fairy-tale like. The piece slowly builds into some strong
crescendos, yet remains dream-like through much of its long, sailing wave-like
length. This disc is one of the most delightful discs I've heard in a long
while. Unlike anything else on the ForTune label or almost anything else
we've listed in a recent times.
