DescriptionWaiting is a novel by emigrant Chinese-American author Ha Jin. It won the National Book Award and the Pen/Faulkner Award (1999) Waiting is a story of love in limbo and the lives it leaves on hold as Lin Kong, a doctor in the Chinese Army, battles cultural forces and his own uncertain heart in a quest for love's fulfillment. The plot revolves around the fortunes of three people: Lin Kong, the army doctor; his arranged 18 year marriage to Shuyu, whom he has never loved; and his girlfriend at the hospital where he works, the nurse Manna Wu. Beginning in 1963 and stretching over a twenty-year period, Waiting is set against the background of a changing Chinese society during the tumultous years of the cultural revolution and after the opening of China to western trade under American President Nixon, and the early years of China's astronomic economic development. It contrasts city and country life and shows the restrictions on individual freedoms that are a routine part of life under communism. But Waiting is primarily a novel of character. It presents a portrait of a decent but deeply flawed man, Lin Kong, whose life is spoiled by his inability to experience strong emotions and to love wholeheartedly. Surprisingly, Lin achieves his goal only to begin finding Shuyu suddenly much more attractive and his relationship with Manna much more stifling. Sharing Widget |
