Description

Karl Weigl was another of those highly regarded Austro-Germanic composers (Mahler was impressed) displaced by the Nazis, who fled to reestablish a career abroad. Unlike most of the others, he succeeded rather well, with a series of academic posts that most of his fellow emigrees could only dream of: Brooklyn College, the Boston Conservatory, and the Philadelphia Academy of Music. He was a representative of what musicians would have regarded as High Teutonic Art back before first the Neo-Classicists and then the Serialists put paid to this whole notion of a pre-Baroque tradition. As with the Kaminski I've uploaded at the same time, so with Weigl: the material is weighty, profound, and contrapuntally brilliant. Where Kaminski's Work for String Orchestra is extremely serious, however, Weigl's survey of apocalyptic times (implying a tie between biblical content and modern events) has moments of wit, especially in the Symphony's scherzo, The Dance Around the Golden Calf. Listeners wondering what to expect should think of Sckrecker's orchetral opulence and Bruckner's formal control.
