Few people in Britain are aware of the War of 1812 between Britain and the USA, effectively a sideshow to the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. This new book focuses on the events of 1814 when a British army landed on the US mainland and burned Washington in revenge for the burning of York (now Toronto) in Canada.

The scars on the White House are apparently still there and Barack Obama pointed them out to David Cameron when he visited.

An interesting, if little known, historical episode.
