Willie Kent - 1996 - Long Way To Ol' Miss [mp3@320] Willie Kent Willie Kent in 1993 Wikipedia: Willie Kent (February 24, 1936 – March 2, 2006) was an American Chicago blues singer, bassist and songwriter. Kent was born in Inverness, Sunflower County, Mississippi. Although he had played the bass guitar in Chicago's clubs since the 1950s, Kent worked full-time in careers other than music until he was over 50 years of age. Following heart surgery, he stopped work as a truck driver, and formed a band. Kent continued to play live shows, even after being diagnosed with colon cancer in early 2005. He died in Englewood, Illinois in March 2006. Long Way To Ol' Miss Artist: Willie Kent Title: Long Way To Ol' Miss Producer: Robert G. Koester Release Date: November 26, 1996 Label : Delmark Records Catalog: DE-696 ASIN: B000004BLW Genre: Blues, Chicago Blues, Electric Blues Duration: 62:36 Chicago blues bassist Willie Kent presents 8 originals & 2 originals by guest guitarist James Wheeler. jazztimes.com Review By Bill Milkowski: Bassist Willie Kent has been a mainstay on the Chicago scene since the '50s. He's played sideman to just about everybody and has released a few albums as a leader. His latest, Long Way To Ol' Miss (Delmark DE-696; 63:33) kicks ass while staying strictly in the Chicago blues tradition. Kent's big-chested deep soul vocals add Delta punch to driving shuffles like "Blues In My Bedroom" and "Dirty Work." Guest guitarist James Wheeler plays sweetly on "Extension 309" while Kenny Barker and Ken Saydak add that all-important Chicago piano sound that Roosevelt Sykes made famous. But the secret weapon in this band is killer guitarist Vernon "Chico" Banks, who is turned loose with a vengeance on "What You're Doin' To Me," "Ain't Got Long To Stay" and "Black Night." His stinging blues-rock tendencies enliven these tracks. Expect to be seeing a solo recording from this guitar slinger in the near future. 01. Long Way to Ol' Miss (Kent) [5:32] 02.
