It was pretty easy to create a bootable grub4dos usb using bootice.
I used a 2.0 32GB usb flash drive to extract the windows.7z file too.
It booted in about 4min which isn't bad at all.
Once booted you are running a full windows OS in ram.
Lots of useful programs are already installed for you.
Now the draw back to the OS running in ram is that no changes you make will get saved just like a WinPE because the changes you make does not get saved back to usb drive when shutting down.
The OS is extracted from a compressed file 39.vhd.gz
Now the plus side in running a full OS from ram is that it allows you to run more programs than a WinPE can.
In Virtual Box create Windows 8.1 32bit virtual machine
Go to settings and attach the 39.vhd in storage using SATA option.
Go to System > Processor and enable PAE/NX
In Display > Video enable 2d and 3d acceleration and set video memory
This boots no problem on my VBox
Now you can change things like time zone, language, weather widget location or put extra programs, i recomend portable programs
beacause there is good chance you install something that will fail
to boot the system alltoghether, this has happend to me with even basic programs because this OS "concept" is very fragile.
Dont try to put lots of extra stuff no more then 50-100mb.
Reboot the virtual machine to make sure everithing boots fine.
Use 7zip to gzip the VHD using normal compression
Name this gzip, 40.vhd.gzip
Copy to your usb drive
Open menu.lst on your usb drive with notepad and add the following as is
title Windows 8.1x86yourname - FiraDisk RAMDISK
find --set-root --ignore-floppies /40.vhd.gz
map --mem /40.vhd.gz (hd0)
map --hook
root (hd0,0)
chainloader /bootmgr
And save.
Should look like this
