This fantastic story, based on a literary novel, unfolds both in Manhattan of today as in the nineteenth century. During a harsh winter, Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), an Irish mechanic, decides to steal a huge mansion, closed as a fortress. He is sure that the house is empty, but ends up finding a girl (Jessica Brown Findlay) on the inside. When he discovers that she is about to die, comes a love story between the two.
