Renee Michel is the concierge of a grand Parisian apartment building, living a lonely life after her husband dies, with only her cat for company. To the residents she is honest, reliable and ignorant: a typical concierge. But this facade of humble servitude is a sham.



Renee is, in fact, highly intelligent with a passionate interest in the arts, culture and philosophy, who reflects daily on the idiocies of the inhabitants of her building.



Meanwhile, several floors up, 12-year-old Paloma has decided to end her pampered and privileged life on her 13th birthday. Her decision has been made on the entirely logical grounds that all adults are clearly disappointed in their futile lives, and that therefore the sensible course of action is to kill oneself before the death of hope.



However, the sudden death of one of their wealthy neighbours and the arrival of a new owner in the figure of a cultured and sensitive Japanese gentleman not only brings together these two very different inhabitants of 7 Rue de Grenelle, but also changes their lives for ever.



The book, by philosopher and novelist Muriel Barbery and published in France in 2007, has just been published in English.
