Biography
Prominently known as South Florida's #1 battler and New Times’ Best Hip-Hop Artist, Wrekonize's quick thinking, innovative flow and articulate cadence have led him center-stage on MTV and into the studio with some of today's most talented producers. Born in London, England to musical parents and moving to Florida at the age of 5, everything Wrekonize has achieved to date has been the product of his own perseverance and skills. Winning numerous local battles kept him busy, exposed and testing his emcee skills, but his big break came, though, in 2002, out-witting 300 hungry emcees to capture Miami's 103.5 The Beat's coveted spot in the MTV MC Battle of Champions. Sparring head to head with emcees from NY, LA, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit, Houston and Atlanta, with surprising ease; he won the MTV MC Battle II: Take Over in Times Square to advance to the next emceeing stage. The next stage was MTV's Battle: New Year's Eve where he was set to battle the winner of MTV MC Battle I, an emcee tagged "Reignman”. At the young age of 19, Wrekonize wasn't fazed by the cameras and high stakes pressure. He came out on top of that competition to snag the "Champion" title from the coveted 2003 MTV MC Battle of Champions, which gave Wrekonize more of the national recognition that he deserved. The exposure from his winnings opened doors to features in XXL, Urban American Magazine, and several on-line interviews MTV.com. In several of his interviews he expresses how his mission is "to innovate and produce music that reminds people that it is still all just entertainment. It doesn't have to be mafia all the time. Hip-hop is supposed to be fun. I've also learned I could come out there and not have to flavor anything up; just give people my personal opinion." Wrekonize is definitely having fun making music and roasting emcees- and he doesn't plan to slow down anytime soon. While working to promote his first video, "Breathe", pushing his group The Illiterats, and promoting his EP, "From Sunrise to Sunset", a group of friends introduced Wrekonize to SouthBeat Records. CEO, Greg Frankel instantly knew that Wrekonize should be slated as their premiere artists, and he quickly signed him to a record deal in April of 2004. Since then, Wrek has released The Overdue Mixtape hosted by Nick V of the Baka Boyz, opened for the likes of G-Unit, Mos Def, The Roots, WuTang and has been hitting the studio recording his debut album. "I'm looking to bring the off-the-wall concepts back and incorporate it with the more polished flow." With production from JR, Ty Fyffe, Reef, Blockhead, Emile, and DJ Khaled, we're sure his debut is going to have the right mix of underground flavor and commercially promising singles to keep his core fans at home and up and coming fans on the leash. Since he feels that "freedom and hip-hop should go hand in hand", you can be assured that he has a lot to say. He's here now - so don't sleep - just Wrekonize!
