Poltava, in de Oekraïne,1941. Abrascha en Larissa worden gevierd als wonderkinderen van de klassieke muziek. Zij spelen in grote concertzalen in heel Rusland voor de partij en Stalin. Hanna, dochter van de Duitse brouwer Max Reich en zijn vrouw Helga, is zelf een een begaafde violiste. Ze vraagt aan haar vader om les te krijgen samen met de Russische wonderkinderen. Larissa en Abrascha zijn eerst nog een beetje terughoudend. Maar als hun lerares, Irina Salmonowa, toestemt om ook Hanna te onderwijzen, ontstaat er tussen hen een diepe vriendschap die door de Duitse aanval op Rusland zwaar op de proef wordt gesteld.
