Album Review
I've been a huge Z-Ro fan since the early 00's, and ask anyone from Texas, the dude's one of the undisputed GOATs. Unfortunately, with the well-documented fallout with Rap-A-Lot, the material released over the past few years have been mediocre. I think the travesty referred to as "The Crown" best illustrates the point. Before Ro came forward with the details of the drama, I was afraid that the dude had fallen off, and didn't really have much to offer anymore. This is the album that proved me dead wrong. 2013's "Tripolar", while it didn't get the shine it deserved, was a glimpse into the new King of the Ghetto. He's shown that he still makes quality music, and is one of the best artists out right now, let alone come out of Houston. "Melting The Crown" has soulful, polished production that Rap-A-Lot didn't really give him, and he shines as an emcee. My personal favorite track, one that really hit home for me, was "Miss My Mama". This is his most emotional and poignant songs to date, and it's only the tip of the iceberg. "Too Many Niggaz" is a redux of the classic Ro song, and even though the hook is the same melody as the first, it sounds as fresh as it can be. Dude comes with straight bars throughout the entire album, with an ear for melody that's criminally underrated. Ian Larson
