Description

Until roughly 30 years ago, very little was known of Domenico Zipoli, beyond the fact that he was a Jesuit who traveled to Argentina, and died "of an infectious disease" at the age of 37 in 1726. Today, we know he studied under Alessandro Scarlatti and Bernardo Pasquini, rose to a fairly prestigious organist post in Naples, and then, for reasons that have never been made clear, joined the Jesuits, traveled to Spain, and traveled to Buenos Aires. His harpsichord music was long thought to be all that survived of his musical output, but in recent years some of his music has been recovered in Bolivia, including two masses, and a "mission opera."
