ABOUT THE BOOK
Kydd is offered a new command but that ship is still under construction, so he decides to look up one of his old naval friends and enjoy some of the pleasures of London. This is cut short when he is summoned to Portsmouth to bear witness at the trial of Sir Home Popham for his actions at Cape Town and Buenos Aires. Kydd confides in friends his true feelings about the way his old commander was treated and, when his opinions become public, finds himself in hot water with the Admiralty. Kydd is punished for his indiscretion by being given a different command: a mutiny ship, Tyger, moored at Yarmouth.
Tyger has recently mutinied, but instead of having her company dispersed around the fleet, as is customary, the ship is pressed into immediate service in the North Sea. Kydd faces a crew still under some malign influence. Enemies aboard and on the high seas are just the start of the problem. Soon he will have to take his untested and untrustworthy crew into the Baltic, and there they will get entangled with Napoleon's invasion of Prussia. The stakes are desperate, the task seemingly impossible, and the French implacable. But the only way for Kydd to avoid disgrace is to gamble his reputation and crew on a crazy mission to snatch a Prussian division out of the jaws of Napoleon's advancing army.
Will he return home once more a hero or himself face a court-martial?


ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Julian Stockwin was born 15 January 1944 and wanted to go to sea ever since he could remember. His mother said that as a toddler he went up to sailors on the street, and on one occasion dragged home a dead seabird because it smelled of the sea! He was entranced when his great uncle Tom Clay, a seaman in square-rigged ships who had sailed around the Horn in the "Cutty Sark", took him over this ship. As a young boy he read everything about the sea and was especially terrified by a description of a great storm, but longed to go to sea to experience one.
He won a scholarship to a grammar school, but his mind was captivated by seeing low grey shapes far out to sea, outward bound to who knew where. He passed this sight every day on my way to school; his scholastic performance suffered!
In the hope of having the nonsense knocked out of him, his father sent him to a tough sea-training school. This only strengthened his resolve for a life at sea and at fifteen he joined the Royal Navy.
After leaving the Navy (rated Petty Officer) he practised as an educational psychologist. He worked for some time in Hong Kong, where he was commissioned into the Royal Naval Reserve.
