Speed Kills 1 and Speed Kills 2 represent the most extensive revision to the Speed Kills series in over twenty years. Speed Kills 3 has not been revised. It was previously called Speed Kills 2010 and was a revision of the course created in 2010.

I’m Doug Marks, a Metal Method instructor and producer of the Speed Kills series. Michael and I began working on this program using the working title, “How to play really fast!” It is that, but so much more. For this program we really wanted to reveal Michael’s secrets, to dig deeper for these instructions. For example, one of the most basic shred techniques is sweep arpeggios. You’ve never heard his sweep secrets revealed to this extent before. It’s not just a matter of “rolling” your fretting hand. There are a series of moves happening with both hands.

One of our goals was to make each exercise truly a separate lesson. We wanted to be able to use any of these techniques as YouTube videos. So, it was important that each exercise stand alone without a need for massive additional explanations. Many of these exercises are short and to the point. For example, Michael describes the simple, one measure economy picking exercise as, “Learn this exercise and you will have mastered economy picking.” Simple but true.

So, we started with “How to play really fast!” and by the time the program was complete we realized that Michael Angelo Batio had actually revised the entire “Speed Kills” series.

Speed Kills 1, Speed Kills 2, and Speed Kills 3 are designed to be studied simultaneously. You don’t need to study Speed Kills 1 before tackling Speed Kills 3. All three volumes are taught on an intermediate to advanced level. Think of these three volumes as a catalog of techniques. Each technique is separate, explained completely without the need to study any of the other material. Sure, you do need to understand the basic techniques like alternate picking, tremolo picking, and hammer / pulls. Most of you have a handle on this. If you haven’t mastered the fundamental techniques they’re all covered here too.
