Jason Curtis Newsted (born March 4, 1963 in Battle Creek, Michigan) is an American metal bassist known for his work with Metallica, Voivod and Flotsam and Jetsam. Joining Metallica in 1986 after Cliff Burton's death, Newsted remained a member until 2001, making him the band's longest-serving bassist. After he left Metallica, he continued with his project Echobrain, played with Ozzy Osbourne and joined heavy metal band Voivod. Newsted uses the pseudonym Jasonic, which serves as both his alias in Voivod and the name of his music publishing company. He is also the founder of the Chophouse Records studio and label based in California.

In December 2012, Jason announced that he had formed his own band called Newsted with drummer Jesus Mendez Jr. and guitarist Jessie Farnsworth, with Staind guitarist Mike Mushok joining later in March 2013. The band released a four-song EP, titled Metal, on January 8, 2013. Newsted is planning on releasing his debut album entitled Heavy Metal Music on August 6, 2013. The first track to be released from the album is called "Soldierhead".

The rock journeyman finally releases his solo debut. It’s just over a decade since Jason Newsted called time on his 15 years with Metallica, a gig he landed after the tragic death of original bassist Cliff Burton. Since then he’s become one of the most prolific players on the circuit, including stints with Ozzy Osbourne and thrash legends Voivod. Jason ‘New Kid’ is 50 now, and Heavy Metal Music – there’s some statement of intent – is as solid as his lengthy CV would lead you to expect.

Its chugging riffery and Newsted’s near-spoken growl pinpoint largely legacy influences – the nu metal crowd might find it a little too trad. But at its best, as on the churning …As the Crow Flies, or on the crunching, Sabbath slowburn of Futurereality, it’s a blast, and his sure-footed backing (including Staind guitarist Mike Mushok) play up a storm. Hugely likeable, highly recommended.
