The album was part of the Icon series launched by Universal Music Enterprises, which featured greatest hits releases "from 30 major artists spanning rock, pop, R&B and country." [1] The album features "You Know You're Right," first released on the band's 2002 greatest hits album, Nirvana, as well as the four singles from the band's 1991 breakthrough album Nevermind: (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium, In Bloom) and three singles from their 1993 follow-up album In Utero: (Heart-Shaped Box, Pennyroyal Tea, Rape Me), plus one album track from In Utero (Dumb). The album also includes the single from the MTV Unplugged In New York album: (About a Girl) and the unplugged version of All Apologies, which was originally a single off the In Utero album.
