TWV: Telemann-Werke-Verzeichnis (From Wikipedia)

The Telemann-Werke-Verzeichnis (Telemann Works Catalogue), abbreviated TWV, is the numbering system identifying compositions by Georg Philipp Telemann, published by Martin Ruhnke.

The prefix TWV is generally followed by a genre number, a letter indicating the key (in some cases), and a work number. The genre number indicates the general type or medium of the work. A major key is in upper case, a minor key in lower case. The second number is the work's number within the genre. For example, Telemann's Concerto polonois in B flat major for strings and basso continuo is TWV 43:B3. His Orchestral suite in D major is TWV 55:D18, and his Overture in G minor is TWV 55:g4.

Vocal works were catalogued in a similar way by Werner Menke in the Telemann-Vokalwerke-Verzeichnis (Telemann Vocal Works Catalogue), abbreviated TVWV. This Album: Telemann’s Wind Concertos Vol. 3

Our exploration of Telemann’s wind concerto cosmos is now on its third mission, and the infinite imaginative powers of this great master continue to inspire our fascination. Not too long ago Telemann’s reputation was anything but good; he was regarded as a scribbler without an original idea to his name. But now we can say that this was surely the most mistaken of all mistaken judgments in the whole of music history!

Our Vol. 3 again offers evidence in his favor. In his Flute Concerto TWV 51: D4 Telemann creates a concerto of great appeal verging on a musical »idyll« despite the solo part’s limited tonal resources. In contrast, the following Oboe Concerto TWV 51: c1, a work maintaining what is mostly a gloomy and melancholy tone, produces a shocking effect with its extreme dissonance repeated several times right at the beginning. The four other concertos selected once again exhibit this composer’s immense stylistic versatility in their individuality and instrumental variety.

The ensemble Cologne Camerata — Camerata Köln is one of the most long-loved chamber music ensembles for early music in the world. Under the name of Camerata Köln a handful of music students founded the ensemble in 1979 at the music conservatoire in Cologne. Ever since then, enthusiasm for the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the desire and imagination to pursue wholly new sounds and forms of interpretation, artistic approaches and stage presence in combination with a great deal of research and spontaneous desire for music making have marked the work of the ensemble and their international concerts.

After many years and extensive engagement with the better and lesser-known composers of the baroque and classic periods, the members of the ensemble Michael Schneider, Karl Kaiser, Christine Busch, Rainer Zipperling und Sabine Bauer consider themselves ambassadors of a musical art which, despite having been penned a long time ago, can still move modern audiences emotionally, spiritually and aesthetically, and can therefore be called "contemporary".

Emotion, energy and structure are the major theme which Monteverdi, Bach and Haydn made the objects of their art; and it is these topics which build a bridge to the present and current needs of audiences.
