Geoff Hamilton's Cottage Gardens-DVD Rip (BBC 1995)

Geoff Hamilton looks to the old cottage gardens of the past and adapts the more popular features to modern plots. In building two cottage gardens from scratch at his home in Barnsdale, Geoff sets out to simplify the practical problems of creating a natural rustic look, with archways, vegetables, seating areas and flower gardens.

Geoff lays a garden path, prepares bedding and talks to some keen cottage garden owners.

A look at climbing plants, with Geoff making visits to many spectactular gardens.

Episode 4:
Make Up, Make Do and Mend
Geoff Hamilton meets gardeners who have made good use of discarded and waste materials.

Episode 5:
Nora Barlow, Mrs Simkins and the Lady in the Bath
Geoff visits the gardens of Alex Pankhurst in Essex, and Gravetye Manor in West Sussex.

Episode 6:
Cottage Economy
In the final edition of the series, Geoff visits a herb garden and a beekeeper's grounds.

Geoff Hamilton was undoubtedly Britain's most popular gardener, with his blend of down-to-earth practical advice, moneysaving ideas and sheer enthusiasm for everything to do with gardening. During the 1980s and '90s his own garden in Rutland, called 'Barnsdale', became almost as familiar to the millions of TV viewers who tuned in to BBC 2's "Gardeners' World" each week as their own back yard.

Geoff died of a heart attack in August 1996 while taking part in a charity bike ride.

The "Geoff Hamilton New Gardeners Foundation" is a bursary at his old horticultural college, set up in his memory to fund students of any age and level of practical experience. It is worth up to £4,000. They invite applicants (and perhaps accept donations!).
